Love in return

Scripture: Zechariah 3-4, John 14

John 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.”

I’m still reflecting on yesterday’s word: the one Jesus loved. Last night at the  first Christmas Eve services, I tried to remember that I am the one Jesus loved, and each person I spoke with is the one Jesus loved. It helped me slow down and pay attention and be fully present.

Pastor Michael referenced John 14:23 in his message last night (which was excellent). Jesus promised to live in anyone who loves Him. He and the Father will move in and “take up residence” (make our home) in him or her.

It’s another reminder of what God’s after: a love relationship with us. We are the Beloved. He desires our love in return, and wants to be at home with us. What a picture of intimacy. No one knows me better than those who share my home, who see every mood, good and bad. That’s the kind of relationship God desires with me.

Three more Christmas Eve services today—lots of opportunities to love people! The most important command Jesus gave is to love one another. I love Jesus by loving others. And when I do, Jesus lives in me, makes His home in me.

And it starts with His love for me. Knowing that He loves me, that I am the one Jesus loves is what fills me so that I can love others. We love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). Love in return.

So today: be loved (know you are the Beloved) and then love others. See everyone through the lens of God’s love. You are the one Jesus loves; so are they.

Love one another!

Prayer: Lord, it’s basic. It’s fundamental. It’s the most important thing. Help me to know I’m loved and love in return—love You and love others.
