Peace like a river
Scripture: Isaiah 47-48, Matthew 6
Isaiah 48:18 If only you had obeyed my commandments,
prosperity would have flowed to you like a river,
deliverance would have come to you like the waves of the sea.
Observation
The Lord appeals to wayward Israel and reminds them that they chose not to listen and obey. If they had listened and obeyed, their prosperity (Heb. shalom—peace, prosperity, well-being) would flow like a river, and their deliverance (Heb. tsadaqah—righteousness, deliverance, success, well-being) would have rolled in like waves of the sea. It is classic Hebrew parallelism—two ways of saying the same thing: obedience brings blessing.
God’s commands are always for our good. When we obey, we get on the right side of life; that is, we are living in harmony with the way the world was created to run. When we ignore them, we butt up against life and experience pain. So much of our pain in life is self-generated because we fail to listen to God and do what He says.
But when we do, we thrive! We experience “peace like a river” (the title of one of my favorite novels and of a chorus I grew up singing). I love the image of God’s shalom flowing like a never-ending river in my life. Don’t think of prosperity purely in financial or material terms—it describes a full-life flourishing, thriving in every part of your life: physically, spiritually, emotionally, relationally…everything.
That’s what God wants for us. And why He gives us His commands.
Application
The application is obvious: listen to God and do what He says.
It’s fitting that this passage is paired with Matthew 6, part of the Sermon on the Mount, some of the clearest and most challenging ethical teaching of Jesus. Today, I’ll be doing my best to do what Jesus said in that chapter…knowing that it leads to my prosperity—shalom.
Prayer: Lord, I love You. Thank You for loving us so much that You gave us Your commandments for our well-being. Help me today to listen to You and do what You say.
