Slow of heart

Scripture: Luke 24

Luke 24:25 So he said to them, “You foolish people—how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!”

Observation

This is what Jesus said to the two men walking between Jerusalem and Emmaus after they explained their bewilderment over recent events. Literally it reads, “O foolish, slow of heart to believe…”

That phrase, “slow of heart to believe” struck me. Jesus said they were slow to believe the prophets—the word of the Lord. Then He interpreted or explained everything written about Him in the scriptures. Later (v. 45) He opened their minds to understand the Scripture. Jesus is the key to understanding the scriptures.

Application

“Slow of heart to believe.” I don’t want that phrase to describe me. On the one hand, I don’t want to be gullible; I don’t believe everything people say. But I do want to be quick to believe God and what He says. To be a disciple of Jesus is to listen to Him and do what He says. Belief is implied.

I hope as I get older that my faith deepens and grows and matures. Less gullible, more believing. Quick to listen and obey.

Prayer: Lord, I love You and want my heart to be wide open toward You, quick to believe whatever You say, quick to obey.
