Your faith made you well

Scripture: Ezekiel 35-36, Psalm 121, Mark 5

Mark 5:34–36 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

35 While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue ruler’s house saying, “Your daughter has died. Why trouble the teacher any longer?” 36 But Jesus, paying no attention to what was said, told the synagogue ruler, “Do not be afraid; just believe.”

A woman who had been sick and suffering for 12 years snuck up behind Jesus in the crowd. She believed, “If I only touch his clothes, I will be healed.” So she reached out and touched Jesus and was healed. Even though Jesus was being jostled from all sides, He knew that power had gone out from Him, so He stopped and asked, “Who touched me?” The woman came forward and told her story and Jesus responded, “Your faith has made you well.”

The story suggests that Jesus did not consciously choose to heal her. She believed and acted and it happened. Yes, it was the power of Jesus that healed her, but that power was released by her faith, not His choice. Literally, her faith made her well.

I know this can be overdone. However, in the light of this story, I’d say that many of us, myself included tend to underestimate the power of our faith. I hasten to add that it was faith in Jesus, not faith in our faith.

Then poor Jairus heard the news that his daughter was dead. Immediately, Jesus tells him, “Don’t be afraid, just believe.” Jairus had also just heard Jesus say to the woman, “Your faith made you well.” He had an immediate and living example of the importance of believing in Jesus. And he did. Rather than dismissing Jesus because it was too late, Jairus trusted Jesus and took him home to see his dead daughter. And Jesus raised her.

I am encouraged to trust Jesus, to believe in Him and His power, to exercise and grow my faith. Jesus can do anything. The woman and Jairus both believed that and came to Him for healing, and miracles happened. I want to have the kind of faith this woman had—believing in Jesus so deeply that if I can just touch Him, I’ll be healed, power will be released.

Prayer: Lord, I love You. I’m going to pray some big prayers today, believing that You can do it! Lord, increase my faith. Grow my faith!
