Don’t give up—give it over

Scripture: Exodus 13-14, Acts 8

Exodus 14:13–14  And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”

Moses’ long battle with Pharaoh was finally over…or so it seemed. The last of the ten plagues broke Pharaoh’s spirit and he let the Israelites go. Free at last!

But then Pharaoh changed his mind…again. “What have we done? We’ve let our free labor source go free.” And he marshaled his army and set off in hot pursuit.

I tried to imagine how Moses felt when he heard that Pharaoh had changed his mind yet again and was coming after him. “Oh brother. Not again! When will this end?” I would have felt weary, discouraged, ready for it to be over. Some of the Israelites quickly gave up and were ready to go back to Egypt!

Then God spoke to Moses, and Moses to the people: “This is the final battle—and it belongs to the Lord. You will not see the Egyptians again after today. Stand still and watch the Lord fight for you.”

There are some problems, some battles that seem to go on and on. You feel discouraged and ready for it to be over. I’ve got some.

Rather than giving up, I want to give it over to the Lord. The battle belongs to the Lord. Surrender it in prayer and trust Him and do what He says. It’s not easy, but it’s the only way forward. Don’t let the enemy discourage you and talk you into giving up and going back. Give it over and go forward!

Prayer: Lord, when I feel tired, discouraged, ready to give up, help me instead to turn to You and give it over. It’s Your battle, not mine. Help me surrender and trust and obey.
