I have enough

Scripture: Genesis 33-34, Psalm 8, Luke 17

Genesis 33:9–11 But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” 10 Jacob said, “No, please, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand. For I have seen your face, which is like seeing the face of God, and you have accepted me. 11 Please accept my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough.” Thus he urged him, and he took it.

Observation

Twenty years earlier, Jacob had run for his life from a murderous Esau. Now a very nervous Jacob sent an elaborate gift ahead to appease his brother. To Jacob’s surprise, Esau was happy to receive him, and said he didn’t need the gift. “I have enough; keep what you have for yourself.”

Jacob convinced him to take the gift as an expression of his gratitude and because “God has dealt graciously with me and I have enough.”

Jacob had enough to give the gift; Esau had enough that he didn’t need it.

They could each say, “I have enough.”

Application

We live in an acquisitive culture that loves to accumulate more than we need. Most of us could easily say, “I have enough.” But it’s hard to do.

I have enough. I don’t need to buy more, get more, receive more. I have enough to be content.

1 Timothy 6:6–8 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. 8 But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content.

I have enough. I can be generous with others because “God has dealt graciously with me and I have enough.”

2 Corinthians 8:2–3 …for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord.

If the Corinthians could be generous out of their poverty, I can be generous out of my plenty. I have enough to be generous.

I have enough.

Prayer: Lord, thanks for all Your gracious blessing in my life. Help me be content and generous because I have enough.
